A Portrait of Two Towns

An exhibition of photographic portraits and stories celebrating the people of two towns in Somerset: Chard and Yeovil. This project focuses on those who bring life to the town, the:

  • shop owners
  • families who have lived locally for generations
  • people who have recently moved to the area
  • people who offer an insight into a different culture
  • young people and older people, from all walks of life, who have made their home in Chard and Yeovil

The project provides residents with an opportunity to create a photographic self-portrait in a touring studio, and record a story about their home town. It explores the notion that the character of a town is determined not by its shops and streets, but by its people. This project is about wonderful people, with meaningful stories, seen through a lens. The project will culminate in an exhibition of photographs at Westlands Entertainment Venue and Chard Guildhall as part of the Somerset Art Weeks Festival, which has the theme ‘Cultural Connections’, 19th September to 4th October 2026.

Commissioned by Somerset Art Works and Chard Community Hub.
